What illuminates Sunshine Café are memories and connections between people

The leisurely time that flows at Sunshine Café

and gentle conversations with customers.
It is the accumulation of these small daily moments that keeps Sunshine Café's light glowing.

The two masters behind Sunshine

  • 初代マスター 橋崎 光男

    First Master: Mitsuo Hashizaki

    Founded Sunshine Café in 1973.
The first master has been beloved by many customers over the years for his bright and friendly personality.
Standing at the shop every day, just as always, his belief that "business built with sincerity and steady connections is what earns lasting appreciation" is the foundation of Sunshine Café.
He has supported the café with the same "honest handcraft" since the day it opened.
He gently embraces the atmosphere of Sunshine Café with his warm smile.

  • 二代目マスター 橋崎 卓

    Second-Generation Master Suguru Hashizaki

"I couldn't bear to see Sunshine Café disappear." This heartfelt sentiment led me to take over the café, and I cherish above all else the "timeless goodness" I've inherited.
Just as we walk alongside our customers' memories, we preserve the original flavors and atmosphere even in our new location.
So that Sunshine Café continues to be a cherished place in our customers' memories, we carefully attend to every detail of our work.

二代目マスター橋崎 卓

Keeping the flame alive for 50 years,
and beyond.
A heartfelt wish: "We can't let this disappear."

Fourteen years ago, I left my office job to help out at the café and support my father,
who had fallen ill. At first, I wanted to "try something new,"
but hearing customers say "I love this place" and "I'm so glad the taste hasn't changed,"
I realized that Sunshine Café's true charm lies in "staying the same."
That sentiment continues to keep the flame of Sunshine Café burning bright.

Relocated from our 51-year location, reopened in May 2025 Bringing cherished memories
to a new location.

Our new location quietly carries the "memories" of Sunshine Café's past.

The copper panels that adorned the ceiling of our previous location are now embedded in the walls,
and the chandelier that welcomed customers for many years shines once again at the café entrance.
The familiar doorknobs, large wooden tables, and sofas
have all been carried over to the new space, just as they were.

Our menu, too, honors the timeless flavors of the past.
Our signature coffee is roasted in-house.
and dishes like our thin-egg omelette rice and hotcakes carry on the nostalgic, comforting flavors of Sunshine Café inherited from my father's generation.

  • An unusual transformation: Why the founding owner
changed from a "tofu shop" to a "café"

Founding owner Mitsuo Hashizaki was born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1943. After graduating high school, he moved to Osaka as an apprentice, as his future wife Keiko's sister and her husband ran a tofu shop there.
He also attended a café school—a vocational training institution for café workers, which no longer exists today.
After completing his apprenticeship, he ventured into running his own tofu shop.

Back then, it was an era when "hard work paid off in any business."
With the Nippon Steel Sakai Works located near the shop, when bento orders came in, we sometimes received massive orders of 1,800 to 2,000 meals at once. During those days, we worked tirelessly with barely any sleep.

While the tofu shop was thriving as a business, the early morning hours were difficult for my wife, who was helping out while also raising our children. Seeking a "sustainable business" that would protect our family life, and riding the café boom of the time, we founded "Sunshine Café."

  • Love for family and wife
    gave birth to "Sunshine Café"

Introducing in-house coffee roasting, which is becoming standard nowadays, was quite rare at the time.
The Umeda area where we opened was a cutting-edge industrial district of Osaka, a financial hub bustling with businesspeople.
Employees from Nikko Securities, who were regular customers from the beginning, would stop by for coffee during their breaks, and we even delivered 80 glasses of mixed juice for their meetings.

Back then, things weren't as strict as they are now, so it was common for people to slip away from work for a tea break.
Come to think of it, there was even a barbershop exclusively for Nikko Securities employees. People would leave work to get a haircut.
It was a busy era, but society as a whole was more relaxed.

  • The secret to longevity in commercial Umeda:
Close ties with the local community

At the tofu shop that started his business journey, there was "Nippon Steel Sakai Works," and at Sunshine Café, there was "Nikko Securities"—owner Mitsuo Hashizaki created spaces where "work" and "meals and breaks" were closely connected within the community. Even today, his belief remains unchanged: "Business conducted with sincerity and steadfast connections is what earns lasting appreciation."

Witnessing the lives and changes of working people around him without seeking novelty, and knowing firsthand companies that have endured in Japanese society, the owner maintains his unwavering approach even after 50 years since founding, passing on to the next generation the principle of "conducting business with sincerity and dedication."

"I’m glad nothing has changed"—
Every time we hear those words,
we can’t help but straighten our posture just a little.
We at Coffee Shop Sunshine hope to remain
that familiar place where our customers
can always feel at ease.
